Mouse Not Registering Clicks

My mouse stops registering clicks. The cursor moves, but click (left or right) doesn't do anything.

I plugged in a wired mouse, but the problem is still there.

I have a mid 2010 iMac 21.5inch.

I can’t log in as I can’t click on my user icon.

Any advice is appreciate

Thanks Michelle,

I tried a wired mouse and the problem was exactly the same. And the wireless mouse does connect correctly. The cursor moves as it should move. Only the clicking doesn’t work.

I followed some other advice I found on the forum to repeatedly shut down and start the iMac. And indeed, after some cycles, the mouse worked fine. It doesn’t seem to be a vey sophisticated way to solve a problem, but it did work.

Boot into Safe Mode according to Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files
