Finder/Preferences/Sidebar check boxes not working

Recently two issues:

(Using Big Sur on Macbook Pro M1 with Apple external monitor. All latest updates installed.)

  • The dock has disappeared twice. Latest, it seemed to be related to not closing my Macbook Pro Cover.

Not even sure what the initial cause of that was. It's okay right now.

  • Right now. It seems Finder/Preferences/Sidebar is not working. Ticking boxes for Hard Drives, External drives works but nothing else is displayed. Ticking boxes for Recents, Music, iCloud, etc. has no result, although the boxes stay ticked.

Hi Vincenti41,

Thanks for contacting the Apple Support Communities!

We understand that your Dock unexpectedly disappears and that you can select items in the Finder but nothing is displayed.

First, we'd recommend that you test this behavior while in safe mode: How to use safe mode on your Mac

When you start in safe mode, it will do a basic check of your startup disk.

If everything is working as you'd expect in safe mode, we'd like to have you restart your Mac normally and test again.

If you're still experiencing the same behavior, we'd recommend that you test it in a new user account as well: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

This will help us to isolate this behavior further. We look forward to your reply.

Cheers!
