How do I stop the Mail app from opening when I click email links?

I'm using Big Sur on a MBP 2021.

I do not want the Mail app to ever open anything. I have set the default email to Gmail, but when I click an email link in different sites, it opens the Mail app (which I hate). This only happens on certain sites. When I look at the source code it looks like a normal email command.

Sometimes when I receive an email it goes into Mail and I never see it in Gmail.

Why are these links opening Mail? How can I put a permanent stop to that?

I don't use an app for Gmail. I just go to gmail.com in the Chrome browser.

You need a default mail client. There are many options if you prefer not to use Apples® baked in Mail.app

Friends don't let friends use browser mail— it does not get more archaic than that.

Change the default web browser or email app on your Mac

Thanks! However, I don't use an app for Gmail. I just go to gmail.com in the Chrome browser. That being the case, when I go Apple Mail >> Preference >> General >> top box reading Default Mail reader, there is NO Gmail client to select.

When I look in the App store there are a dozen similar email apps with Gmail in the title and the logos all look similar.
