Which OS is best for an iMac 2008?

Hi I have an IMac 2008 and I'm struggling to find out witch OS is best for it to run faster and to work properly. Can anyone help me with this? to know witch one is best suited for it. Please! At the moment it has OS x El Capitan version 10.11.6 But it seams not to work so well on this Mac for example when i go in to my photos some photos that have lower quality i can see them and use them other photos have a big ! mark... and it says that the pictures have a hay quality and that because of that i can't do any thing in regards off those photos (and there are quite a lot of them in the same situation, nearly all of them, there are just a few that I can access). So please if any one can tell me what to do to to solve the internal errors of this OS or what OS should I install that my iMac supports it better and runs better on it! Thank you !!! Hope to hear from you soon!!!

I have an early iMac 2008 (2.66gh, 4gb, 1TB), it came in 2015 from the seller with Mountain Lion, then each year I installed the following over each previous OS, Mavericks, Yosemite, now El Capitan. With El Capitan, I am running at peak efficiency + reliability, serving all my requirements. I am using Waterfox Classic as my browser. I use the Gimp, a Photoshop alternative to make changes , edit my photos then just put them in folders I create to store them on my iMac. My El Capitan is the only Mac OS I use.

I wouldn’t try boot-camp if you want to upgrade your Mac OS to windows 10/7. On the 2008 iMac it’s impossible and I’m telling you this from personal experience

I have the same exact computer, but not the same struggle. You can’t upgrade your computer to a newer OS since it’s not supported anymore but El Capitan for me runs really good and immaculate. You could try to plug-in your iphone in your computer for those photos to be transmitted to your phone and find out if they are better quality on the phone rather than the iMac. If you have the exact photos you want to check out then you can plug-in the photos on your iPhone into your computer and see if they're better quality or not.
