Incorrect bookmark icons in Safari list view

Icons for websites are not always the correct ones. The wrong ones are somehow copied from others above. See the screenshot. It's been happening for 6 months or more. Any ideas on how to fix it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you––PeterB.

Hi PeterBphoto,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We're happy to help with this issue you're having with the bookmarks on the Mac. First, let's check your Safari settings and make sure "Show website icons in tabs" is on: Change Tabs preferences in Safari on Mac

"Show website icons in tabs

Include the icon for each website along with its title."

Then test to see if the issue occurs in safe mode: How to use safe mode on your Mac

"Safe mode prevents your Mac from loading certain software as it starts up, including login items, system extensions not required by macOS, and fonts not installed by macOS. It also does a basic check of your startup disk, similar to using First Aid in Disk Utility. And it deletes some system caches, including font caches and the kernel cache, which are automatically created again as needed."

Have a great day!

Hi PeterBphoto,

I can confirm this!

Safari 14.1.2 - macOS 11.6  - MBA M1 here.

I think it’s a bug - if I remember correctly the problem exists at least since macOS 11.3 here.

Also happens during/after Safe Mode & with Guest Account.

Also happens with a default Bookmarks.plist.

Resetting Safari or clearing the Favicon Cache doesn’t solve the problem.

Only happens when in „Edit Bookmarks“ mode.

Navigating bookmarks through the Bookmarks Sidebar shows the right icons.

Also navigating the bookmarks through the Favorites Bar does show the right icons.

Interesting side effect: open Activity Monitor and select its CPU view -> Safari CPU goes to 120% when in „Edit Bookmarks“ mode - compared to about around 7% with only Safari Support Community page & this thread open.

Also navigating bookmarks through the „Bookmarks“ menu item gives me the spinning beach ball of death (with a Bookmarks.plist of about 2 MB).

Safari Technology Preview (at least 125-132) doesn’t show the „Edit Bookmarks“ mode wrong icons problem.

Can anyone else confirm this?

ArmMan,

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, it didn't change anything. The Safari preference setting 'Show website icons in tabs' doesn't apply to the area shown in my screenshots. That setting affects a different area altogether. Restarting in Safe Mode changed nothing. The new screenshot attach to this reply was taken during Safe Mode.

I appreciate your help! Stay well––PeterBphoto
