accurate length of distance with 2 watches

Both my spouse and I have apple watches. We start & stop our outdoor walk workout at the same time & walk the same distance. On a 5 mile walk, there is always a difference of .25 miles between our walking distances. Very frustrating. Why and how can this be fixed.
