f.txt malware

Today I found that on a specific website, a newspaper, I get downloads of an f.txt every time I open an article.

This file ends up in the downloads folder.

It only happens with that specific website, any other website has no problem at all.

I found it might be a kind of malware hijacking advertisement downloads.

How can I fix this?

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 11.5

Thank you!

I followed all the steps and it seems the problem is not there any more.

Hi Giorgio1955,

If you suspect that your Mac has malware:

  • Delete the downloaded files.
  • Make sure that you're running on the latest macOS updates. You can check for new updates in System Preferences -> Software Update.
  • Malwarebytes has an excellent reputation on this site. The premium tier isn't necessary - the free version will work fine.
