iPhone 13 Pro bought in US from Apple, is it covered by Australian warranty & will apple care purchased in US work in Australia

Hi guys,

My friend who lives in the US is wanting to purchase me an iPhone 13 Pro and bring it back with them to Australia. My question is, in the case that something goes wrong, will the iPhone be covered by warranty by Australian apple stores and if the phone is purchased with apple care in the US, will it be eligible to receive apple care in Australia?

Thank you in advance

The only time you would likely use an AppleCare+ plan would be to get a reduced cost replacement phone if the phone is damaged. Since iPhone is sold country specific, a phone purchased in the US would not be able to be replaced in Australia with the same model phone. And Apple doesn't offer different phones from what was originally purchased. You could get a reduced cost screen replacement using an AppleCare+ plan in Australia. But the biggest issue would almost surely negate being able to use the plan in Australia. I would not invest in AppleCare+ on a phone purchased in the US if the intended country of use is Australia.

iPhone warranty (standard) is NOT international and would not be applicable in Australia for a phone purchased in the US.

While I think your friend is making a very generous offer, it would be far better if they bought your phone for you in Australia. You could then have full warranty and if you want to add an AppleCare+ plan it would be honored in Australia.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Thank you! Are you saying that whilst the warranty is limited, Applecare should be fine? Or that Applecare might be limited here due to warranty clause?

No, AppleCare+ is NOT fine. It will not be honored outside of the country of purchase. While most Apple warranties (and AppleCare+) are international, they are not for iOS devices. You may be able to get a screen or battery replacement outside of the country of purchase, but any other repair will not be covered. And even those may or may not be.

That is not correct for hardware support on iOS devices; it is for other Apple products. For iPhones and iPads Apple will only provide service in the country where the device was purchased, except that the EU counts as one “country” for warranty and out of warranty service. Some Apple service providers in other countries will provide service as a courtesy, but they are not required to, and there are many posts from users who have been denied service outside of where the phone was purchased. And non-Apple Apple Authorized Service Providers in other countries will not provide service for non-locally purchased iPhones or iPads, because Apple will not reimburse them. This is especially a problem in countries with no Apple corporate stores, such as Egypt, India and Pakistan.

Thus, if someone wants Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) to fix their iOS device they should only buy it in the country where it will be used.

Applecare is international I believe. However since it is an extension of the warranty (plus a few other features) and there are constraints on the warranty in other countries you may find support is limited.

Note this statement from the iPhone and iPad warranty:

"IMPORTANT RESTRICTION FOR iPHONE AND iPAD SERVICE.

Apple may restrict warranty service for iPhone and iPad to the country where Apple or its Authorized Distributors originally sold the device."

Please read carefully what I wrote. I in no way said that Applecare gets around that warranty exclusion. All is does is extend whatever the warranty does include, plus a few other features. Applecare includes "additional features such as 24/7 priority tech support" Apple does not say that is excluded if you take the device to another country, ergo one cannot state as a blanket statement that ApleCare does not apply for an iPhone in another country.

cjrbur2: Here is what AppleCare covers. Read it. As you can see there is some debate as to what is or isn't covered and the most definitive source for this information is Apple's own documentation. --> https://www.apple.com/legal/sales-support/applecare/appforiphone.html

You will see several places in that document where Apple repeats the hardware repair limit.

I believe Applecare is international. I strongly urge you to read what Apple itself says (see the link in my previous post) about this because many people on this forum may have their own interpretations as to what Apple says and in this situation you need to understand the legalese. However, the main feature Applecare offers which is an extension of the original warranty is not something you can take advantage of in another country because of the limitation I quoted. In other words, if AppleCare extends your warranty coverage but there is no coverage in a particular country then there's nothing to extend, if you get what I mean. AppleCare includes a few other aspects such as lengthened support so supposedly you would get longer telephone support, etc. That is not part of the warranty and should not be affected by the limitation as such but is part of AppleCare.
