unicode version 13 emoji in Catalina?

I've just installed Catalina 10.15.7 on my old MBP (Retina, Mid 2012).

The Emoji characters available haven't updated to include Unicode 13 (or later) which should I think be on there.

I only noticed because I helped propose the 🪗 and was looking forward to using it 😸. (All I see is a blank square 😢.)

Any idea why the emoji set wouldn't be updated, or how to fix it?

Is there a way to check which version of Unicode my MBP is using?

Solved. Those emoji aren't there.

Eventually found that Unicode 13 only came to Mac OS in Big Sur, so no new emoji for me.

It's not easy to see which version of Unicode the different OS's support. Not sure why. The iOS updates seem much more well documented online.

Anyways: Catalina supports up to Unicode 12 If you can see SLOTH 🦥 but not ACCORDION 🪗 , you're probably running Catalina, with Unicode 12 support.

Glad to figure that out eventually.

PS. I know there's ways to get new fonts into the system folders, but it sounds like a big pain. I was mostly concerned if it was a sign of larger instability. Messing with the system folder once I found out there's no instability isn't worth an emoji, even to me.

Update (still no solution):

I tried the suggestions on this site:

https://appletoolbox.com/emojis-not-showing-up-on-macbook-how-to-fix/

  1. Open in Safe Boot. (That didn't solve it.) (Restarted)
  2. Go to Font Book and click ‘Restore Standard Fonts’, then restart. (That didn't bring in the new emoji that Catalina should have.)
  3. I tried creating a new account. (Still no new Emoji. Where did they go?)

Obviously not a critical issue! But if the emoji are missing, what else is wrong? I'd feel more secure if the features that are supposed to be here are.

I've looked (following instructions found on another site) and can't find the file where the emoji font is located.

I'm wondering if I need to do a fresh install?

Any suggestions welcome.
