Recent 14.8 update has broken Messaging

I recently upgraded my iPhone (12), my iPad (Pro 12”), Watch (6) and MacBook Pro (2013 - to Big Sur 11.6) as per the advice given.

I now can no longer send messages (SMS and MMS) to non-Apple users. IMessage is working absolutely fine, and while I’m all for Apple having world domination, there are some of my family and friends who don’t see it this way.

It is not my wireless connection, it is not my service provider. All was working fine across the four devices until I installed the upgrade.

I have tried all the - totally useless - suggestions that I have been able to Google.

If you have an iPhone - and both iPad and iPhone are signed-in to iCloud with the same AppleID, to send SMS/MMS messages from your iPad you must explicitly enable Text Message Forwarding for your iPad on your iPhone. After an update, it is sometimes necessary to verify/reset this setting:

On your iPhone:

Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding - set to ON - and explicitly enable your iPad/Mac from the list of devices.

Also ensure that Messages in iCloud is enabled on both your iPhone and iPad:

Settings > [Your Name / AppleID] > Messages - set to ON
