Friendly names such as John Doe <john@doe.com> with iCloud Custom Domains

I've brought a custom domain to iCloud using the new custom domain feature. I can set a friendly name in iCloud web preferences such that when I send a message from the iCloud Mail web site, my "From" address looks like John Doe <john@doe.com>.

But when I send from the Mail app on MacOS Big Sur, the mail looks as if it's from john@doe.com. And nothing I try seems to get a friendly name to show up.

When I configure the Mail app to be a client to Microsoft 365 or Google, I'm able to set and use a friendly name. Just not with custom domains.

Is this a known issue that will be fixed in Monterey? Or is there something I can do now?

Thanks.

I’m having exactly this issue as well.

When you go to your aliases on iCloud.com, you can choose the alias (custom domain email) and enter a “full name” for it (as well as other current iCloud addresses), but custom the email never refreshes within Mail email preference list on Mac (like it does for other Apple-based addresses; I tested it)—and when sending test emails, they arrive simply from the address itself, minus any name.
