why does washington dc (wmata) smartrip card not appear under transit cards in apple wallet?

It turns out it's an issue with my iPhone. This feature is supported for iPhone 8 and up. Mine is a 7.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities! We understand that you're not seeing the option to add a SmartTrip card in the Wallet app.
This type of transit card does appear to be supported in North America: Where you can ride transit using Apple Pay Are you using the steps here to add the card: Add a transit card to Apple Wallet
Be sure that you're signed into iCloud, and also that you've enabled Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode on your iPhone.
After reviewing this information, let us know if you still don't see the option to add your transit card.
