Mac Mailbox is too large with Google Mail Server

I have a Gmail account for work and use Mac Mail. The size of my Mac Mail is 20+GB which is far too large for my 128GB drive on my MacBook Air. Is there a way to have Mac Mail only keep say 3 or 6 months of emails on my MacBook Air and keep the remaining messages in the Gmail cloud? I don't need all of my Gmail messages to be downloaded to my computer but I want to keep all the emails in my Gmail account (in the cloud).

Another option ... can I create a folder on the Gmail cloud and not have that folder download to my Mac? Anything to limit the amount of storage space occupied on my MacBook Air

Thank you!

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.5

In Gmail settings, Labels, you can disable some of the Labels in IMAP. If you can disable them, they won’t sync with Mail. Depending on the age of your account, you may be able to disable All Mail. That should save a ton of space as it is as it states, All Mail you have ever sent or received.

Mail doesn’t do that.
