Yeah, I think the iCloud custom domain is just a redirect of your email -- I really haven't looked into it much.

sounds like you don't already need email.
But...
This page walks through settings (which I suspect your host may not provide if you don't have email)
If you don't have an email address on your domain, there is no point in setting up a custom email domain. Create your email address first.

I had it before but when I transferred registrar, I never activated again. To activate it I must pay for the email feature which defeats the purpose of using icloud+ for this
