PadOS 15: New “Use-Large-App-Icons” toggle switch to change display size of app and folder icons has serious software malfunction on iPad mini 4
Can any Apple experts please solve the following new iPadOS 15 software problem that I believe is infuriating millions of iPad mini owners who have less than perfect 20/20 eyesight?
After updating the iPadOS 14.8 software on my iPad mini 4 to iPadOS 15 in the UK on the 21st of September 2021 all my app and folder icons were made irreversibly tiny. A new replacement icon enlargement control method now provided in IPadOS 15 is malfunctioning.
My separate stand-alone app symbols are still (just about) identifiable to me on my home screen by their distinctive colours and designs when I squint my eyes and look through my spectacles. But the previously larger printed identifying subtitles underneath all my similar looking folder icons are now too minuscule to read or identify easily at a long distance glance when picking up my iPad - as are all the app symbols these unopened folder icons also display that have now been made microscopically small.
In all older iPad operating systems software up to and including iPadOS 14.8, app and folder icon sizes were controllable at - Settings > Home Screen & Dock > Home Screen > App Icons. This window displayed a twin tick button choice underneath two screen graphics depicting “More” (smaller) icons and “Bigger” (fewer) icons on two simulated Home Screen iPads placed side by side. Choosing the More option allowed 30 smaller icons to be displayed on the Home Screen while choosing the Bigger option allowed 20 larger icons to be displayed.
As explained above, this old icon size control feature has now been replaced in iPadOS 15 at - Settings > Home Screen & Dock > Home Screen with a simple on-off > “Use Large Icons” toggle switch. But operating this switch has no effect whatsoever to either enlarge or reduce the size of the new smaller app and folder icons that remain fixed at their miniature given size.
To be clear, and for the avoidance of any doubt, this is not an issue about zooming controls that severely visually impaired iPad owners may be compelled to use in the Accessibility settings. I do not want, or need, to start faffing about to zoom into part of my home screen and magnify and telescope only a small part of the entire clear screen view that I previously enjoyed.
The fact that the new “Use Large Icons” toggle switch exists and has been incorporated at the same location to replace the previous icon size control method, presumably means senior Apple engineers intended to keep this functionality available to many older iPad mini owners with poorer eyesight.
Accepting a retrograde loss of the key functionality of EFFORTLESSLY seeing my own folder icons on my iPad mini and using the new larger app “organising’ folder icons now provided by Apple in iPadOS 15 is a non-starter for me. The very limited and narrow-minded built-in folders that are offered, such as “Suggestions”?, “Recently Added”?, “Music”, “Games” and “Other”?!?! could not accommodate the wide spectrum of subjects in my easily accessible 20 separate folder icon categories.
My folder icons have distinctive titles such as “On Air” for TV, streaming, YouTube and radio services. “Market Square” is for shops and delivery services. Different folders contain subjects as broad as reference information; rarely used Apple apps; books and libraries; medical apps; hobbies and interests; banking and financial matters; and many, many more distinctive subject areas that means everything on my iPad is easy to find without hardly a microsecond of extra thought. Thus before iPadOS 15: Tap! - I’ve opened cookery recipes for diabetics in my “Bon Appetite” folder; Tap! - apps in my “Way Out” folder show local bus and train times, Tap! - I see event dates from my harmonica interest group and then in the same “Hobby Horse” folder the new parts I need for my old vintage car. Tap! - my “Stop Press” folder opens the newspaper and magazine journals I like. Tap! - my “Fun Fair” folder only has two games, cryptic crosswords and chess. Now after iPadOS 15 I have to waste time squinting to see what I’m doing and to see where I’m going.
Suggestions to solve the issue by buying a bigger iPad with larger icons is also not an option for me as I chose the iPad mini 4 because of its compact size on purpose.
Thank you very much for reading this post. Any help to resolve the issue raised here would be very warmly welcomed indeed.
Kind regards,
seaniconsize
I have the same issue and the page suggested has nothing to do with the size of the icons/buttons on the screen. Not only are they small, but I had an order where I knew where everything was. By reducing the size and increasing to 5 per row, I have to search for apps. This is something that should be adjustable by the user.
No one here from Apple.
Cognizant and responsible Apple employees and teams DO NOT read NOR participate in these, largely, Apple product customer/user to user technical support communities.
You are, and everyone else here, in the posting, are just ranting to your fellow users here.
Many, MANY things have changed in iPadOS 15 ( and some things have changed for the worst, hence I never just blindly upgrade/update to a new OS version of anything from Apple, for many years, now )
If al, of you here,in this post, find many of the features and changes in iPadOS 15 to be of issue, you CAN voice these issuers and opinions to Apple via their product feedback portion of their Website.

NOT helpful. Ipad Air 4, 4 months old. Updated to ios 15 and the ICONS ON THE DESKTOP are ALL smaaler. The calendar and day/time are BIGGER and I cannot shrink those two. You gotta few glitches here, guys, and I am so not the only one irritated.
There are many changes within iPadOS15 - of which, arguably, one of the most significant is the ability to place Widgets on any of the Home Screens; this impacts App and Folder icons.
Widgets placed on a Home Screen now individually occupy one, two or four adjacent elements of a 4x6 icon grid - in addition to the fixed dock at the bottom edge of the screen.
Home Screens without Widgets retain the familiar 5x6 icon grid (essentially as illustrated in your screenshot). Choosing Use Large App Icons in iPad Settings increases the relative size of the App icon within the available grid square. This feature does not expand the icons to fill the home screen.
Thank you Michel. I just did. I also hope I can easily revert back to the last iOS as soon as I have time for another ridiculous hassle. Just finished the latest hassle of removing all my tiny app icons from their carefully organized folders. Now I’ll have to swipe from screen to screen and search through the clutter to access some. Aaarrggh.
If Apple would simply give me the option to use the old 20 icon grid instead of forcing me to use the new 30 icon grid people with vision issues wouldn’t be so outraged. Maybe developers should consult this cohort before “improving” our experience.
Exactly - except options should be standard regardless of sight issues.
As a professional graphic designer, readability is a very basic criteria of good design. Apple now makes the ol’ graphic design term thumbnail now seem ginormous!
I am having this same problem, and this response is unfortunately not helpful because it does not grasp the problem and is providing at best a workaround, but a pointless one. Apple needs to fix the software. Another upgrade is needed that addresses the problem specific to iPad mini. I regret downloading the latest update yesterday, which is 15.1.
It seems that the new layout is set up to work with widgets.
If you add a row of widgets to the top of the home screen, it reverts back to the old spacing/layout with 4 rows of icons/widgets on the page rather than 5, which improves the spacing between the icons and looks much better.
This is no longer an iPad Mini issue. I just updated my iPad 8th generation to 15.1 here in the U.S. and my app icons are now so small I can barely read them. In settings, I toggled “Use large app icons.” Still small. I rebooted. No change. Sure, there are only 20 app icons per page but they are all crammed into the top 2/3 of my screen. Bad enough that Apple decided what’s important to me and put it on my Home Screen and I have to remove it, but now I have to hunt for my cheater readers just to read my tablet. Grrrrrrr.
Exactly. But just for the record it never was just an iPad Mini issue. I posted above some time back that it was happening on my iPad Pro from day one of the “upgrade”. But you are right about all else including grrrrrrr.
That + aaarrrggghhhh. Keeping our language clean. They be so disrespectful.
First, let me thank the OP for detailing the problem so well.
However, this answer from Apple doesn't have anything to do with the problem at hand.
The problem: Turning the setting "Use Large App Icons" on and off does nothing. I have 6 rows of icons with it on and 6 rows of icons with it off. The setting does absolutely nothing.
I added widgets to the top row and it did nothing to space out the icons any better. Neither did the ‘use large icons’ setting. I still have 1 inch of unused screen space around my icons on the iPad mini. It about the size of my my iPhone screen but on an iPad mini with lots of unused screen space. Oh how I wish I could go back to iOS 14.
Yes, I really do miss the way the Home Screen worked in iPadOS 14. I do like the widgets in iPadOS 15, but I liked the arrangement better in 14. Or better yet, on Samsung you can chose your Home Screen grid and chose how many app icons are on a page. You can chose:
4x4
4x5
5x5
Dear iPadOS 15 Updaters,
Take a look at the original post: I got my old iPadOS 14 bigger app and folder icon Home Screen back again … just posted a few minutes ago, for mention of a solution to all our problems.
Yours helpfully,
Jock MacAdam
