Incorrect WhatsApp badge count

Please help!

I have an iPhone XR running IOS 15 (but have had this same issue across multiple IOS updates).

Let's say I receive messages from 3 different WhatsApp conversations. If I open the app, even if I only read one of those conversations, the badge count on the icon on my home screen becomes zero, even if the other conversations are still unread when I open the app. I really need those badges to help remind me to reply to those other messages.

This doesn't happen for other messaging apps e.g. Messages or facebook messenger.

I have changed my notification settings and reinstalled the app but the same issue seems to occur. Other forums suggest this is an apple issue - is this a bug we can fix?
