What does “Notifications Silenced” mean on iPhone

Hello,

I just updated my OS to the latest version yesterday.

My friend’s OS is also updated. For some reason, We always get this message “has notifications silenced” on our message thread even:

  • do not disturb is off
  • focus is off

anyone else experiencing this? Attached is the screenshot.

My wife and I both have identical iPhone XRs with identical settings. When I text her, I get the "xxx xxx has notifications silenced" message. BUT, when she texts me, all is well, and she doesn't see the same "notifications silenced" message. AND, sometimes, I get a "Delivered Quietly" message along with the "notifications silenced" message. Then an option appears that says something like "deliver anyway". I click on that, and she receives the test and notification and sound. AND, sometimes, the text comes in WITHOUT a sound, or the default sound, or the custom sound she has set up for me.

What's up? Solution please.

Me 2…my wife and I both have the phone13 pro max it always says my wife has her notifications silenced when she does not. She even turned her send focus status off and still same thing. Makes me think she isn’t getting my messages. Apple needs to fix asap or I’ll be returning the piece of **** that riddled with glitches and problems

I have a person who has my number but has mild mental issues. They send me iMessages any time of day or night about stupid stuff and various delusions they are having. Even at 3am in the morning. I love them but... I have a life and previously I was able to silence them without them knowing and deal with their hundreds of messages at a time convenient to me. Now they are asking me why it says I have notifications silenced for their message stream. In my case it's true - I have silenced their conversation for the reasons stated. It's never urgent but they can't help themselves. If it were urgent they could always ring. I'm going to have to make something up as a response - but even if this was working correctly this is a gross invasion of MY privacy by Apple. I realise it's probably a mistake but they really haven't thought this through. Why does the other party need to know I've silenced notifications? It's none of their business and there may be good reasons why I want this information to remain private.

Sorry I realise this doesn't address the problem. But it does also say this if you really have silenced notifications. I just wanted to raise the issue that this feature is BAD news and may cause many people problems if they have similar situations to mine.

Omg yes!! I am having the same issue! People are thinking they cant text me cause i’m taking a mental break. It’s seems like such a small thing but it is so annoying. Yes my phone isnt on ringer but it is on vibrate. I have checked other people’s settings too and there’s are the same but they dont have this issue.

I’m seeing this bug too. My GF gets these messages with every text to and from me, just like other posters here. Despite the message, I get all notifications on my end. This lasts for a few days then resolves itself, but eventually returns.

Worth noting, I have my GF on emergency breakthrough, so her texts should NEVER be silenced for me.

UPDATE

I just went to Settings > Messages and disabled the Focus setting. Immediately the message stopped being sent to my GF. I then turned it back on and all seems good so far. So while it is fixed for me now, I expect this issue to return unless addressed by Apple.
