Fix for serious iOS 15 Health app reporting lag times

Hi all,

I nearly blew my top after updating to iOS 15 upon discovery that the Health app updates new activity at intervals of 10 minutes–when're-it-******-well-gets-around-to-it: up to TWO hours for me.

I walk early every morning and rely on getting—to the 0.01 mi.—how far I have walked with every-minute updates. Image my displeasure on my first walk after updating—no matter what I changed in Settings, Health updated every10–32 minutes that first walk. My walk was 0.6 mi. off as a result of not being able to get information. GRRRR!

Sure, I wrote Apple with my annoyance, but… I really wanted to be able to know exactly how far I'd walked that minute.

A mistaken launching of the Maps app while I was walking this morning led to this discovery:

  1. Open the Maps app;
  2. Tap the location icon. if needed. or just wait for it to figure out where you are. When the upper left-hand location arrowhead becomes a black outline;
  3. Immediately switch to the Health app and VOILA! all new activity (distance, steps, speed, etc.) is updated.

It is not elegant and I wish to **** that Apple did not make me work so hard today for something that worked perfectly Tuesday morning before I updated to iOS 15, but this does work if you've given Location Services permission to use Maps and Health while using the apps.

Hope this saves someone else the utter aggravation of having of being ±10% off on a cherished walk/run because iOS Health updates when it danged well feels like doing so.

Cheers,

Terre

Why does apple release an OS that makes their on app useless for what most people use the app for? Everything was working fine until the new update. I am beginning to believe Apple is trying to follow Microsoft ability to mess up everything they touch. I have tried everything and nothing works. Health is now useless for a jogger or a walker! Thanks a lot Apple!

Very frustrating. Thanks, Terre, but the map trick doesn't work for me

I normally use the iPhone real time step counter every hour when I am working to make sure I do 300 steps. Now, it doesn't update in live time so I am having to just count myself and wait....... for the iPhone steps to finally show a figure. Please can we get the real time update back

Any other tips?

I agree—this is the worst. One thing that is helpful to know is that if you completely close out of the app and reopen it, it will show you the updated step count. (Just make sure you completely close out and reopen.) But this doesn’t help those of us who want to watch it going up in real time. It’s a pain to keep closing and reopening.

I’m so disappointed with this update too. I used to periodically check the health app throughout the day and it would say “you are taking less/about the same/more steps than you usually do by now”. It also no longer shows the average daily steps for this calendar year compared to the previous calendar year. I wish we had the option to re-instate these features.

So sorry. I am looking for distance as I don't count steps. The Apple Maps approach works for me with the 12 Pro Max and AT&T. Yet, yesterday (Sunday) was back to every 10 minutes or so. This morning, the Apple Maps thing worked every minute.

I am thinking that there is an AI component, a carrier component and a device component. Apple can write software that controls all three.

COME ON APPLE!

Thanks for this! And yes, my usual walking route is less than half the mileage it usually gives (and is!) and in general it doesn’t seem to be logging correctly since I updated to iOS 15.1 (plus it ruined my calendar which even the Genius Bar couldn’t fix despite wiping out my entire iPhone and reinstalling). I guess Apple’s health data will be questionable (it thinks I stayed on the couch all day) if it doesn’t fix this soon!
