Apple Watch Series 3 won't update

I just purchased a secondhand Apple Watch Series 3 for a friend. It's a little older so it had to update before activating, so it upgraded to WatchOS 6.3 (presumably before updating again) but then it just freezes up and tells me I have to update my phone's OS. I am running the most recent iOS, so that can't be right. Is this a problem that can be fixed or am I gonna have to wait for another update of iOS to fix this? Because right now I have an effectively useless watch that won't pair with anything.

Yes it's not the phone it's seems to be a storage problem with the watch.

What phone are you trying to pair it too?.

Then there is this;

The apple watch 3 GPS only has only 8GB of internal storage, most of that is taken up by the operating system and other critical software with not much space left for the update.So installing or even pairing to an ios14 or ios15 phone is proving nearly impossible for just about all the watch 3 users on this forum.

The same applies to Apple watch 1 and 2 they are almost impossible to either pair or update with an ios 14 or ios15 phone.

Thanks but that link is just telling me to do what I've already been trying and failing to do.

Just for reference since you seem to be more versed in this than I do, do you possibly see future updates fixing this problem or is the series 3 just doomed to obsolescence now and I should get a newer model?
