iOS 15 + Watch Series 3

My iPhone is running iOS 15 and my Series 3 watch apparently needs to update to communicate with my phone. I had automatic updates turned on but this one didn't go through for some reason overnight. I've followed the suggested steps for unpairing and updating (including restarting my phone) several times, but it refuses to update the Watch OS. What should I try next?
