I was prompted on my phone to update my email password and did so...then realized that I had not in fact as was indicated changed my password 42 hrs ago now I am wondering if my phone and data stored there is secure?

What this a text message that popped up? If so, it was a scam. So, change your eMail address's password. Setup two-factor authentication for your eMail account.
