Having trouble adding a second person to a new HomePod MIni. What am I missing?

I want to add my Mom to the HomePod Mini, and I can't get through the invite section. She has no Apple product - we just want her to be able to ask Siri what appointments are on the calendar. When I try to add people, the invite always fails. What do I need to do?

If you follow the link from the article you came from you would’ve seen this: Become a member of the home in the Home app

Followed by: Find out what to do if you can't invite someone to control your home with: You and the people you invite need an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch updated to the latest version of iOS or iPadOS or a Mac updated to the latest version of macOS.

Disable Recognize my voice if you want others accessing your information, like calendars that would need to be in your calendar https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/homepod/apd779d9bb45/homepod
