Apple translate: Translation unavailable

Hi all,

In the first few hours after the update to IOS 15 on my iPhone Xs, the new translation features worked perfectly. For the past 2 days I get the message "Translation unavailable, please try again later" every single time. When I try to translate through the app, the text I want to translate just disappears without giving me a translation or an error.

I live in a foreign country and this was the main part of the update I was looking forward to because it makes my life so much easier. Does anyone else have this issue or know how to resolve it?

I have restarted/soft reset my iPhone, and all the dictionaries for Translate are downloaded to my phone.

It’s weird because on my old iPhone 12 Pro it worked fine. The problem is on my new iPhone 13 Mini.

I got it working again! After completely wiping and resetting my phone and still no progress, I turned off the "On-Device Mode" in the Translate settings and suddenly it worked again!

So the offline dictionaries seem to be the problem for me. Offline translation still does not work.

Can anyone else confirm if this solved their problem?

So (unhelpful) follow-up. Issue persisted for a few days. Lined up a call with an Apple Senior technician on Monday of this week. Tested again on Saturday and it worked perfectly.


i changed nothing - no new updates downloaded; I didn’t restart my phone; I didn’t jump up and down and spin 3 times. So I can’t say why it started working but it’s now normal.
