Reset Encrypted Data

I do not remember the old passcode of my ipad so I went through all the steps to reset it and now it won't let me use my apple id until I enter my new AND old passcode. When I press I forgot it asks me to reset encrypted data but then doesn't do anything. I tried to go to reset all settings but it's still there. How can I get this to go away so I can use facetime again on my ipad

Hello Swillis2497,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. Based on your post, you can't restore your iPad because it prompts you for encryption password. We'll do our best to assist.

To restore an encrypted backup, you'd need to know the password created to make that backup. Otherwise, you would need to restore the iPad, as new instead of from a backup: About encrypted backups on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch (Under section, 'If you can’t remember the password for your encrypted backup'.)

Even if you restored the encrypted backup with the correct password, it will still prompt you for the old passcode, because it's restoring that data to the iPad.

If you originally forgot the iPad passcode, then you'd want to follow: If you forgot your iPhone passcode

Set it up as new (without restoring a backup) but you can sign in to your Apple ID and iCloud accounts to restore what information you can.

Hoping this helps out, take care.

Hi Swillis2497,

We'd confirm the computer used has an updated version of iTunes or is up to date with macOS (to use the Finder) to restore the device. Alternatively, you could try these steps from another computer (with updated iTunes and the Finder).

Try restoring again with the steps from: If you forgot your iPhone passcode

If the issue persists, then it might be best to contact Apple directly: Get Support

Wishing you well, cheers.

Hi, I'm not trying to restore the backup at all. I already reset everything else and just want to delete or reset the encrypted data. This was my old Ipad that I wiped and had given to my boyfriend who proceeded to forget his passcode. There was nothing on it yet so we just followed the recovery steps for a forgotten passcode. Once we logged in with his apple ID it asked him to use his old passcode (which we don't know) to restore end-to-end encrypted data and it gives the option to reset the data if you can't use the passcode, but it doesn't do anything when you click on it. That's the problem I have, not being able to reset the encrypted data when the option is given to me.
