How do I stop storing in iCloud? How to turn this function off?

Somewhere I clicked something related to iCloud storage and it started to store everything from my laptop onto iCloud. Naturally it ran out of space. I do not want to buy more storage, I just want to manage storage. I only want to store photos in iCloud. How to turn this function off?

Thanks.

I want to remove all docs from iCloud.

See the last paragraph of the article Work with folders and files in iCloud Drive - Apple Support

You can't back up only photos to iCloud , its only checking and unchecking the box of photos in Mac system preferences when you uncheck the box syncing stops , but it doesn't mean the old photos that were saved in iCloud still occupies iCloud space they do , however new photos if you try to upload will not get saved .

The better ways is keep on the basic default settings turned as on , either move documents to another location or reduce the iCloud data by deleting them or upgrade the storage plan .

Thanks but still confused. I began by mistakenly clicking a function that automatically uploads all of my laptop data to the iCloud. I do not want this to happen. I only want photos backed up to the iCloud.

I tried "Turn iCloud features on or off" but then the warning prompt is "If you turn off iCloud Drive, all documents stored in iCloud will be removed from this Mac." I don't want to remove from the laptop, I want to remove all docs from iCloud.

The Finder window is set up differently now and indicates that its trying to upload to iCloud (storage is full) but I don't want this to happen.
