i connect my macbook by wifi to a projector but it won't show the correct image. It connects, but the image shown on the projector screen is my desktop photo, even when that isn't the Powerpoint showing on my laptop screen.

If you are getting ANY image on the projector, then the connection is working, and only a few more details need to be configured.
The most likely fundamental issue is that 'Extended Desktop' is combing the screen area of the projector to your built-in display by concatenating the screens along an edge.
if you want the same image on each display check the [√] Mirror displays checkbox:
... when checked, the displays are shown as nearly completely overlapping, and EXACTLY the same compromise resolution and refresh rate are used for BOTH displays.

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities! From our understanding, when using Airplay with your Mac and projector, you are not able to see the opened powerpoint, is that right? Are you able to Airplay any other app?
You can try the steps in this article: If screen mirroring or streaming isn't working on your AirPlay-compatible device.

Yes.
Until there is a second display to arrange, it is not needed, and cannot be forced to appear.
Hi Grant, thanks. I think you have probably identified the problem, but I have not yet been able to check, as the projector is at our local hall and I can't get access until later today. If I open System Preferences now and select Display there is no tab called Arrangement. Only the three called Display, Colour and Night Shift. Does Arrangement only appear if another screen is detected?
Hi SnickZ, thanks, but I don't think this is the issue, as I'm not using AirPlay. I'm connecting to the projector via a Panasonic app called Wireless Manager, which is specific to the Panasonic projector in question. The projector is definitely showing an image that comes from my laptop, so the link is working, it just isn't showing the image I want it to show, which is the image showing on the laptop screen at the time.
