How to fix error 'a problem repeatedly occurred' on Safari on Mac

Using an iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013) running macOS 10.15.7 (19H1419), we're getting the error "a problem repeatedly occurred" when trying to log into Barclays Bank. I have no problem logging into Barclays Bank from another Mac (Chrome works too!)

We have tried numerous potential solutions including:

  • Disabling and re-enabling Java via Debug menu
  • Clearing cache and cookies
  • Ensuring no extensions running in Safari
  • Changing DNS servers to 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4
  • Reinstalling macOS from the recovery partition (Command-R on startup)
  • Reinstalling macOS from the Internet (Command-Alt-R on startup) ... this is still in progress so we don't know whether it will work any better than the recovery partition option.

... but none of these worked to date.

A google search for ["a problem repeatedly occurred" safari] shows 3,410 results so this issue is clearly affecting lots of people.

What else can I try? Apart from just using Chrome instead of Safari.

There have recently been many reports of new problems with Safari. It seems that the recent Safari update has issues. Word has it that Apple knows about the problems and is working on a fix. I assume that it will be released fairly soon. In the meantime, use another browser such as Firefox or Chrome and they should work for you. Also, there are reports that reinstalling Safari and restarting the computer has resolved issues. I hope this helps.
