Airpod Microphone Static

When I use my airpods connecting to my macbook air, the microphone comes back sounding staticky. It does not have this issue on my iphone. I have tried forgetting the airpods on my mac and reconnecting them, that hasn't had any effect. There is nothing blocking the microphone on the airpods, and I am always right next to the device when this happens so there isn't anything blocking the bluetooth signal.

Hello gadela and welcome to Apple Support Communities. It appears you are having some difficulty with the sound of the mic on your AirPods but only when using them with your Mac.

Answers to a couple of questions may help ensure that someone in the community is able to help.

1) What, exactly, are you using the AirPods mic for on the Mac? Are you using them as a recording input?

2) If you do the exact same thing using the Mac's in-built mic, do you get the same kind of audio anomaly?

3) Are you able to connect a non-Bluetooth (i.e., wired) audio input to the Mac for testing?

Cheers.

Hi there,

to answer your questions:

  1. I first discovered the issue while testing my headphones before a zoom call - I believe they record it and then I could hear the static on the playback. Then whenever I’ve tried again I’ve used the photo booth to test them out.
  2. I do not get the same audio anomaly on the built in mic on my Mac.
  3. a wired headphone with a mic works ok.

thanks!
