Ios15 iPhone 13 brightens every dark photo

I just got the new iPhone 13 Pro. When I take a photo of a person in dark light, it takes the photo and looks good… but as soon as I view it in photos it automatically changes it to a bright photo like it’s in good lighting.

I’ve already turned off night mode, exposure down, etc. My iPhone 11 Pro could take good dark photos, so this should be even better. There seems to be no way to stop this. I’ve preserved settings and turned everything off, yet still it brightens every photo - and I don’t mean a slight adjustment.. it’s taking a dark photo and making it bright.

Please tell me how to fix this. It happens on both front and facing cameras.

I just upgraded from the X to the 13 Pro and was so disappointed!

I took some pictures in a darker setting and when I went to go view them in Photos I saw each out auto lighten one by one. I couldn’t find anywhere in edit to reverse this or the settings to turn this off. As other people have mentioned, when I play the Live Photo it’s normal but the pic itself it altered/lightened.

After googling and finding this forum, apparently this is an issue with no solution :( I got the pro for the extra camera and I love editing my pictures myself. It’s ridiculous that the photo I take is altered automatically and there’s no “revert” option or way to turn this off. This isn’t what I signed up for, this phone cost me is $1,800.

As someone else in this forum suggested, I sent feedback to the apple link provided. I hope they let us turn this feature off, I don’t see the point to it and it just ruins my photos.

Following a recent upgrade from the iphone11 I’m having the same issue as Andrew with the 13 pro max.

A suggestion is to choose another frame from the live feed to avoid the brightened frame BUT the camera app automatically crops any other frame chosen, so, if you’ve spent a while carefully composing a shot , choosing a different frame crops in from the original composition.

Choosing Raw, as another suggested alternative then disables live mode, so if you did wish with hindsight, to choose a specific frame, this is not possible in RAW as RAW and live don’t work together.

I’m very annoyed that my shots taken in slightly dull conditions are being automatically brightened -and the only way I can see to get around it is to lose my original composition and choose another live frame, or shoot RAW and lose LIVE.

I am a keen iPhone photographer and chose to upgrade for a better camera system. This issue however makes me wonder if I’ve made the wrong decision. It seems to me to be a fundamental flaw and a big step backwards.

Please, please fix it Apple.

Hi and thank you for your reply. I too remember film days!

Whilst I understand that some enhancement is nothing new, I can’t for the life of me understand why apple has introduced this auto brightening.

Today I took a sequence of shots outdoors. We’ve had a fairly bright day here today, yet still in live mode, pictures are being auto brightened. So much so, that blue skies are completely blown out ( whatever adjustment I make to exposure) unless the shot is taken in RAW mode. This brightening ‘feature’ is not just a little bit of colour enhancement.

As I said earlier, choosing a non brightened frame from the live mode capture is not a great option if the photographer wishes to keep their original composition.

Auto brightening is not an enhancement. It’s an annoyance.

Thank you- I sent a message to the feedback link a few days ago.

This is the first time I’ve felt the need to complain to Apple after many years of using their products. It’s now making me mad that they don’t appear to have either an email address for customers to use, or the will to respond to comments made via the feedback link.

Has anyone had any response I wonder?

Hi. Nothing works to fix the issue. I’ve downloaded a third party app as well, tried the instagram app, VSCO etc, nothing works. The photos keep getting switched to brighten up when I’ve taken a photo which looks good and when I check to see the photo in the photos app, it’s like the light switches to a more brightened and an unnatural look. So annoying and I want to refund my phone if this does not get fixed.
