Sound on appletv - no voices after playing music

On my AppleTV 4K, everything was ok through my surround system. Then I played music on the music app, went back to a video and suddenly no voices. Rebooted, no voices. Played music again, went back to video, have voices again.

Any ideas as to what on Earth is going on? Sound is HDMI to TV, then optical out to 5.1 surround system.

Does your audio system have a Center speaker? Most dialog in a (5.1/7.1) discreet channels surround sound mix would normally be in the Center channel.

Verify if your Apple TV is set to output in the Dolby Digital 5.1 format. If not, then “Auto” PCM multichannel audio (5.1/7.1) may not be compatible with optical. Or your TV may differentiate for passthrough between 5.1 and 7.1. You wouldn’t notice anything being off for stereo audio sources.
