A drive for a Time Capsule's USB port ...

Any suggestions if adding a drive on a Time Capsule's USB port ... taking into account the newer OSs out there (Big Sur and Monterey) ?

Adding an external drive to a Time capsule does not seem to be straight forward.

I decided to use my TC for Time Machine backups of my 2 computers and to add an external hard drive for my CCC bootable computer backup purposes.  I never used TM before and wanted to try it. This what I did:

  • created 2 new partitions (APFS) on the USB external drive using Disk Utility app
  • to save time, for the first backup, I did a local CCC backup of my 2 computers (connected the drive directly to the computers instead of the Time Capsule)
  • I erased my Time Capsule and set it as a TM container in the TM app

Once completed, I connected the external USB drive to my TC and the 2 partitions never mounted. They mount if the drive is connected directly to my computer.  I swapped the drive for another partitioned external drive that I have (Crucial MX500 SSD) and it does not mount either on my TC.

I am mostly sure that sometime in the process the external drive partitions mounted beside the TC ... but they don't anymore

What going on ?

To get a large SSD for that purpose would be rather expensive, around $500 for 4TB. However, for data backups I recommend this drive from OWC (MacSales.com) as it has proven reliability, excellent customer support and warranties: OWC Mercury Elite Pro 7200 RPM Storage - excellent choice for Time Machine usage, inexpensive and come in larger sizes than SSDs.

If you only have two computers with 1 TB drives max you could get away with a 2TB SSD from OWC. Or get an SSD that's equal in size to the total of the drives in each Mac. Partition it into partitions, one for each Mac, and make a bootable clone of each Mac on it's respective partition. Then do data backups with CCC on a schedule.
