I just bought a new Mac 24 inch from Apple. It seemed like a small screen when I received it a few weeks ago. I just got around to measuring it and the screen is only 21 1/2 inches wide. Why does apple call it a Mac 24 inch when it is only 21 1/2 inches wide?
It is standard practice in the computer (and television) industry to measure screens diagonally.

As with all displays, the measurement is diagonal. For the new iMac that measurement will be 23.5”.
Because computer displays and TVs are measured from top corner to bottom corner.

The screen is only 21.5" wide because monitors and television screens are traditionally measured diagonally from one corner to the other. Your iMac is 24" diagonally. Normal.
