iPhone 12 Pro displays lighter grey/ washed out grey colors

Is there any explanation as to why that happens? I can’t figure out if it’s related to dark mode or screen brightness. But the display clearly starts to show dark grey way lighter then it’s supposed to, like for example in discord since it’s build around darker colors from the get go. Turning off the iPhone and then back on, colors return to normal only to then after a uncertain amount of time to get washed out again. It’s noticeable in other apps too. But the funniest thing is when I tried to take a screenshot of the color shift. To have a before and after, but of course once you restart it and the grey colors are displayed properly, there is no difference of the before screenshot and after. So it’s not just related to discord/ a single app. I really don’t know what to do. All the reset your iPhone tips from the apple supports and etc are great. I’ve updated multiple times already. 14.5-14.8 and now we’re in IOS 15 so doesn’t that mean it’s something in the software related to the display?

Yes. I think I finally found a thread/article in relation to what I’ve been seeing for 7 months. Apps, keyboard, all screens home and lock are “raised gray/black. I’ve been trouble shooting this since my 11 pro. I can’t make it actually happen but a quick fix for me, is go to settings accessibility then toggle on and off auto brightness 5-10 times really quick. Should fix for a few days. What I’ve come to think is the issue is the proximity sensor in the front facing camera. If you notice this issue, go to a pitch dark area or room and it will return to normal. Light makes it bump up the black and gray levels. I seen it on 5 12 pros and now both my 13’s. Obviously it’s software, and no, apple has no idea. They keep swapping out the phone and wind up with the same issue.

I’m really really going deep with this one. Nobody would spend 4 months on figuring it out lol. But. I’ve seen it happening on all phones. No, apple doesn’t have any clue they just swap it out but that’s not a fix….for the 12 series, going in a pitch dark room and flipping a light switch on and off with cause the screen to increase the grays. The 13 series, light does not cause it to change. The only way it’ll fix on a 13 is to open any pic from the camera roll (in hdr) and swipe home. I cannot find anything or anyone that knows what we’re talking about but I wish I could post the video, hopefully it’s the same thing you’re seeing. Be safe man.

Also apple support will always tell you it’s never been reported. It’s their job to keep stuff like this secret. I’m buying another 13 pro max today and I bet it also does it. Funny thing is, I recorded it happening with another phone and engineering said it’s a hardware problem and can’t be fixed. (They also know it’s happening on like 7 phones)

Yeah it’s definitely a tricky one. Your issue sounds exactly to what I’ve been experiencing on a lot of phones from 11 pro-13pro. Unfortunately, there’s very little info about it probably because not everyone notices this. Any settings, any customization doesn’t change. A reset is just a reset but will return after hours to days. Next time you see it act up, try opening photos, choosing any pic in your photos, zoom in on the pic and swipe home. You’ll sometimes see a quick flicker then blacks are normal again

Hello CutePrince,

It seems like you're experiencing an issue with your iPhone display, and we'd like to help.

Just to confirm, it seems like the issue is occurring in multiple applications currently, correct? Do you have any available updates for the affected apps? How to manually update apps on your Apple device

Are any Color Filters enabled at this time? More about how to check and manage color filters here: Use display and text size preferences on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

You can also find some good information on the following page about how to adjust the brightness and color temperature of your device: Adjust the brightness and color temperature on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Thanks!

Nah it’s all good. Yeah, 7 12’s and 3 13 pros……. Id say it’s software obviously. Umm…. I am able to reproduce it by simply going outside, take a picture, any picture, hang out a few seconds, swipe home and boom, blacks are now washed gray. If you view content in HDR, YouTube or a self made vid, it’ll do it depending on the surrounding light. By opening a pic, (takes a few attempts) it temporarily fixes it. The brighter you have the screen, the more it’ll happen. I wish I could upload the video here. The video I captured explains it all….

Yeah, I’ve also had the feeling it might be the proximity sensor, because once this whole gray color bug happened after I spent an hour or so on the phone talking to apple support. Proximity sensor turning off the phone while talking and etc. But it hasn’t been re appearing for quite some time now. Maybe because I did the “press the volume up then down button and then hold the on switch for 10 seconds” restart. And possibly it’s a certain sequence of first turning on dark mode and then other things like calling someone that trigger this glitch. But this whole software issue thing is just oof on apple’s part. You replaced your iPhone plenty times and it keeps reappearing for you too.

Sorry that I didnt reply to your answers from before, I just got a little sad about this whole issue and with no apparent fix in sight. But wow, so that is what's causing it? HDR video recording and if you open pictures, except in the camera roll specifically? Could explain why sometimes it doesnt show itself for a solid week and then it appears "randomly". Dunno man, why is this still a thing. My 12 Pro was the first iPhone i got in years and then there is stuff like this unfixed across multiple generations of their phones? And the iPad Pro with the weird single touch ghost thing, where also barely 1 or 2 people have reported it like this publically. Except apple support and technicians are just *** about it and its so weirdly specific and mildly annoying when you for example are drawing and the iPad just decides you pressed the screen, even tho you didnt. I'm just sad. Atleast Yaay that you have a good video captured of the grey wash happening, jerry please safe us from this doom. Or just me.
