Photo optimization not working on new iPhone 13 pro

I just bought an iPhone 13 pro and transferred everything from my iphone 12 pro. I have the optimize iPhone storage option turned on for iCloud photos but my photos are still appearing in their entirety on my new phone. How do I get the optimization to function like it did on my iPhone 12 pro? My photos are taking up 56g of storage when I have iCloud enabled for that purpose.

I had the same thing happen when transferring from my 12 Pro Max to my 13 Pro Max.

First, I did the transfer wirelessly. I noticed how huge the photo storage was (I had almost no space left!), so I wiped the 13 and did a new transfer (this time, wired). Same result.

So, I backed-up the 13 to iCloud, wiped it, then restored from that backup. Problem solved.

This (I believe) is because when you do an iCloud backup, if you have iCloud Photos enabled, it doesn’t actually backup the photos again (since they are already there). When I restored, it only restored the non-photo backup, then the photos came down via iCloud Photos (and were ‘optimized’, since that’s how I had the setting).

This is happening to me and I spoke to several customer servive reps and they said that Apple is aware of it and has no plans to fix the issue. She stated that they knew about it and it only begins to work when your iphone runs out of storage. Huh??????? It worked perfectly on my iphone 11 pro and saved me about 175Gb worh of space and that one particular feature (photo optimization) was my deciding factor on get a 250gb phone vs the 512gb phone. I got the 13 pro to work more efficient and not less efficient. This absolutely ridiculous from apple and needs to be resolved asap as it's truly affecting the performance of my phone as I'm almost at the limit. I have the latest update 15.0.2. If you haven't updated or upgraded to the 13 or 13 pro yet do not as there are still so many bugs they have yet to fix. Get it together Apple!!

This is an ongoing issue for me, using iPhone 12, 128GB. It first started during last summer (2021) and my was completely unresponsive for three days, mean while i sat on the phone with apple support who continued to advise that I keep the phone plugged in and connected to wifi. I ended up purchasing a San disk Ixpand to manually store all of my photos before doing a hard reset on the phone. I also upgraded my iCloud plan to 2TB.

The issue came back again in early September and Apple support decided to replace the phones hardware, this option worked for a little over a month before the issue returned. After going back to the apple store and complaining they finally agreed on replacing the phone entirely. Since then the issue has occurred three more times, ive been forced to delete everything except for contacts and occasional safari for the past week.

Im planning on saving myself a trip to the apple store and instead upgrading to an iPhone13 pro max with more storage capacity, although I have a strong feeling the issue will continue to appear considering im currently experiencing it on a replacement model for my original iPhone12… Until the time to upgrade comes around I’ll be deciding on wether or not I can stomach the switch to android OS. Unfortunately the only reason I haven’t yet made the switch is because of the iPhones undeniably superior camera quality.

Update: my total GB have been very slowly decreasing the past couple of days and I am currently at about -15GB. I think that optimisation has started to kick in finally. However, the total GB for photos still shows the same number, and all the various entries add up to a larger number than the total stated. Looking forward to the next iOS update.

I really thought it was just me, turned iCloud photos on and off like 3 times, when I turn it off and go into storage it even recommends optimizing to save 20 something GB in my case but still keeps it in both. I just got the 13 pro max yesterday and this was on 15.0.2, now I'm on 15.1 tried to turn it off and on again now it says updating for a couple of minutes now and says that it might take a while, maybe it'll work. On my iPad with the same iCloud and gallery, it takes up less than a GB.

Same issue today. Out of nowhere, my new iPhone 13pro says it's full (256gb). My 11pro was no where near full. I enabled photo optimization and nothing changed. I restarted, nothing. I now can't update apps because it's full and I guess I get to start deleting photos all day to use my phone. This is a huge issue. And since it was working on previous phones, how can this not be addressed yet?
