Big Sur: Finder-window sidebar items rearrange after every restart

I like my sidebar items a particular order, with Desktop at the top. Since the 10.6 update, Dropbox (and only Dropbox), usually down in fifth, magically appears at the top at every restart. I reposition it, and then it's moved back. It's not a huge issue, but an odd one, and it grates against many years of habit.

Is anyone else having this issue?

Hey there doublemeasure,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. We understand Dropbox is changing locations in Finder sidebar. We’ll be happy to help.

If you change the location of Dropbox and then boot into safe mode does the issue return? Test to verify as “Safe mode can help you to determine whether an issue is caused by software that loads as your Mac starts up” and could resolve the issue. You can read how to do this here:

How to use safe mode on your Mac

Let us know what you find. Take care.

Ha! When I booted in Safe mode, Dropbox stayed in place. Rebooting normally, it bumped back to the top.

The Dropbox Helpdesk, who have been friendly and responsive, say that this is a MacOS issue, whilst also saying that their guys are working on a fix. Go figure.

Of course, in Safe mode, Dropbox is not launched at startup…

Kind regards, Justin
