Hello we recently bought a refurbished iMac and we can't download garage band to it. We had garage band on our older iMac and now this refurbished one is saying we have to have Mac OS 11 or higher and this one has Mac OS 10.15 Catalina. can we get an older version of garageband downloaded to this computer? Please help us.
Assuming you downloaded GarageBand previously under your current Apple ID, click your name on the bottom left of the App Store window which will open Purchased. Scroll until you see GarageBand. You should be able to download a compatible version there.

If you don't see Big Sur listed in System Preferences > Software Update, you can't.

so can I upgrade to Big Sur to get the current garage band? I just did an update on this computer to Macos 10.15.7 Catalina....where do I do the upgrade ? I appreciate your help
hmmm I just did that but I don't see it showing and I know we had garage band on our older devices that we had. the icon had already shown on our older 13 inch laptop and on our previous iMac. we never had to download the app as it already showed on our computers
I can't say I ever remember GarageBand being installed by default, doesn't mean it couldn't have happened. However, if you never downloaded it in the past there's nothing to do short of upgrading to Big Sur.

The link I posted lists the compatible Macs. Look under the Apple Menu "About this Mac" to see which model and year you have.
