iOS 15 Podcasts app - Up Next gone screwy

NB: I listen to a lot of podcasts.

Since updating to iOS 15, the Up Next queue is not working correctly. So I add all the upcoming episodes I plan to listen to from various different casts to Up Next in that order. But later I find most of those episodes have disappeared from Up Next -- only a single podcast's episodes remain. What's more, those episodes don't have the handle that allows you to re-order them, as when you add them to the queue manually.

I tried unsubscribing from that one podcast and deleting all its episodes, then re-subscribing. Unfortunately the same thing happened. I experimented with a different podcast app but didn't like its lack of features, and I don't want to spend days or even weeks working out which app I prefer. (My favourite Android app, Podcast Addict, unfortunately isn't available on iOS.)

It's quite inconvenient to have the queue obliterated for no reason, needless to say. My preferred order is to listen to each podcast episode in the order they came out, oldest to newest. Would it make a difference if I let the program just plow through playing all of the episodes of that one podcast? Will I have to give up on Up Next and just start playing each episode manually? Is this a known bug that will be fixed in the next release? Any input appreciated.

Ok so I have been down and back with Support since the release of iOS 15 (contacted them day of release and been in contact since) and here's what we've found. If you ignore the message, PLEASE READ THE LAST TWO PARAGRAPHS. It's a call to action that needs to be done so Apple will prioritize this issue.

When the podcast app is force closed or is booted from the RAM (timed out due to not being used), the Playing Next queue mysteriously disappears. I use the word "disappears" because it's not technically gone. If you try to play a new podcast episode, it'll ask you if you want to resume with your queue after finishing the episode or clear the queue. That's because the queue still "exists".

So the podcast app timed out for the millionth time and your queue is gone again. Pick some random podcast episode and add it to the queue (either play next or play last, really doesn't matter) and boom, your queue with everything that you added to it previously will reappear. Every time this happens to me, I just add a random episode as "play next" and then go into the queue and delete it (I add a TON of episodes in advanced so this still saves me a ton of time).

The other weird thing about this is when doing the above trick to get the queue to reappear, if this is the first time you did it since that current episode has been playing, it will appear as a duplicate in the queue (like if you're listening to X episode 48 and it times out, you get the queue to reappear, and X episode 48 will show as the next show to play in the queue even though you're listening to it right now). Dunno why that happens but just be aware and delete it when it reappears in the queue. It's always next or second if you added a show to play next in the queue so it's easy to find and isn't hidden.

Support sent it to engineers and they pushed back saying they no longer work on Apple Podcast app. If you report the issue to Apple Support, NOTHING CAN HAPPEN. For everyone who is suffering from this issue (should be everyone), you have only two ways to report the issue that will actually be heard for it to be worked on. The first way is in the podcast app, go to any show or episode of a show, tap the three dots, then tap on "report a concern." Feedback type is "Broken Feature" and for "Broken Feature" I put other (seeing as the issue is the "Playing Next" queue, not the "Listen Now") and report it there. The second way is to go to the website on a browser (Apple's site /feedback) and under services, select Apple Podcast. It'll take you to the same place the app takes you. Make sure to use feedback type "Broken Feature"

The support agent made it clear they have no way to report the issue as their teams don't work on the Apple Podcast App anymore so everyone please report the issue using the method above. This is the only way they'll listen and actually prioritize/work on this issue. Also this will be where you report Apple Podcast issues in the future.

I am another user with this problem. I can set the line up and be listening to a podcast. A little time later (maybe minutes) I go in to the up next list and it is as if I had never gone through and added all the podcasts to the list. There is nothing set to play next. I presently have 20 podcasts in my “latest episodes” list that today alone have added to the play next line up several times.

I have hated the Up Next format since the last big overhaul of the Podcast App. I have about 30 different podcast episodes downloaded my phone at any one time; why does the software think that what I want to listen to next is an older episode that I have already listened to rather than one of my unplayed episodes???! The only explanation I have is that the dev has sub-contracted the work to their 4-year old child, AFTER the child has found the key to the drinks cabinet.

However I have now started to experience the problem of it randomly playing different episodes after a pause.

  • first time I paused my headphones (Bose not Apple) to ask my wife a question. I then hit play and it started midway through a different episode of the same show that I had listened to the day before.
  • The second time I parked up at work and turned off the engine part way through an episode. At the end of the day I started to go home and instead of picking up where I left off it played a different episode from the same show that I listened to the previous week.
  • On my way home I had to briefly stop and get out the car. Before I got back into the car, I checked what was showing as 'Now Playing' on my phone and it was the same episode I was listening to when I parked up. As soon as the car started, it played an episode from a completely different show, that I had listened to a few weeks ago.

This has now gone beyond a joke, the app is utter dross. It is the worst piece of software that I currently use. Can anybody recommend an alternative that doesn't harvest all your data to sell to advertisers?

Thanks to the posters who included the feedback link. I have used it to complain that Listen Now is a broken feature.

Thanks Beth. Does that require a Spotify subscription? Or is it separate to the music streaming service?

I could listen via some proprietary apps (e.g. BBC Sounds for BBC podcasts), but I like to mix up my listening, so if I want to follow up a BBC show with a different provider, I'd have to stop what I was doing and switch apps.

And forgot to say, every podcast I had on Apple was on Spotify and one thing Spotify does much better than Apple is make recommendations of things you might want to listen to.

Tangentially, it was quite cathartic making the switch as I realised that I was listening to some shows out of habit rather than anything useful so I had a good clear out too.

Some here buddy! I listen to a lot of News podcasts from different Shows. I want to listen to the latest released Episodes of the news from all the Shows. This is not going to be from the same Show. "Up Next" continues playing the Episodes from the same Show in order even though the episode is not listed in the Up Next window. Why in the world would someone want to hear news from 2 days-weeks-months ago??? The Up Next should look at my library and order the shows in order of release date & time and play the newest in first. Why is this so hard??

I’ve been having the very same problem, and it’s driving me crazy!! I’m glad to see that I am not alone here, but it’s already December and it’s still happening???!!!

I line up my up next podcasts every day, and it is super annoying to have to redo it several times. Right now I’m about to go on a several hour road trip, and it will not go well if I have to keep pulling over to redo my list.

😖

Not just an Apple Podcasts issue.

13 Pro Max, iOS 15.0.2.

Castbox & Spotify BOTH stop anytime the screen locks or I swap to a different app. This is only started happening in the last month and a half or so. Are used to be able to throw on a podcast and navigate around on my phone even play games that I had turn the sound off on while I listen to my podcast. I never had any audio problems for this phone. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the apps, re-downloading my podcasts and playlists, rebooting the phone multiple times, resetting network settings and everything short of completely wiping my iPhone. Cannot figure out what’s going on or why

I am also having this issue - the podcast queue does not match what is listed as "Up Next" and the "Up Next" is taking priority over the queue I created of how I want to listen to my podcasts. I have had an overwhelming response to start using a new app, which is beyond frustrating as I am behind in some episodes and will lose that (without lots more effort on my part) because of this feature change. I have poked around settings and not finding anything. Truly its a big disrupter to my work day to have to continually find the next podcast to list to after an episode.

Also important to note: When the "Up Next" item is played, when I select the podcast episode I wanted the queue will once again be there, but not used within the app.

Overall - super annoying and if not fixed will have to use another app.

I’m having the exact same problem as everyone else here. It is SO frustrating when you create a list of episodes to listen to in “play next/up next” & it just vanishes. I have quite a few different podcasts I listen to & had a long list including new episodes of each podcast which is obviously now gone. But I can’t even put 1 episode in the up next because as soon as I exit the app & it’s gone! Apple please fix this. So many people are having the same problem so you have to acknowledge there is a problem on your end!
