Delete matched songs from Apple Music

Hello guys I'd really appreciate you helping me out on the following issue:

  • Back when Apple Music didn't support hi-res, I downloaded hi-res files, converted them to ALAC and imported them on the Music app
  • I recently noticed many of them were matched and downsampled to 256kbps
  • Now that Apple Music supports hi-res files, I wanted to get rid of the 256kbps ones. I signed out of Apple Music, deleted the files that were matched whilst re-adding them in hi-res on my iPhone.
  • After 5 hours + of work, I log back into Apple Music, the library updates and re-downloads ALL the songs which I had deleted + the ones I had been adding on my phone. I am now filled with low quality duplicates which are undistinguishable if not by clicking "get info" and checking the quality one by one.

I am beyond frustrated, can somebody please help me? Deleting duplicates would be an option , but how do I filter out the low quality files from the apple music lossless ones?

Thank you in advance!

Hey there sledgemain,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you’re seeing a lot of unexpected duplicates in your Music library. We’ll be happy to help.

To verify, do you have Sync Library enabled on your devices? That may have an impact on why this occurred, especially if it was enabled on your iPhone and you enabled it on your Mac after deleting the files. You can read about using Sync Library here:

Turn on Sync Library with Apple Music

You can also see how to easily find and remove duplicate songs on your Mac here:

Take care.

First see About lossless audio in Apple Music - Apple Support. My understanding is that hi-res and lossless tracks that are available in the Apple Music catalog can be added to your iCloud Music Library and streamed or downloaded to your library or device if the appropriate settings are in place. Matched tracks that aren't stored locally may also be available in higher resolution where available. I don't believe that anything has otherwise changed with uploaded tracks. Your local copy in the iTunes/Music library where the file was added should remain unchanged, other libraries and devices get a 256K AAC version to stream or download.
