Wireless CarPlay blocking data / preventing phone from connecting to cellular data.

Since updating to iOS 15 on my iPhone 12 Pro when I connect to wireless CarPlay apps on my phone say they are not connected to the internet, so I can't search for destinations in Waze, or Apple Maps, it won't send text messages (via voice in CarPlay or via physically on the phone). It sends iMessages via SMS (no data). As soon as I turn wifi off to disconnect Wireless CarPlay data starts working again. This seems like a bug bug in IOS 15 that it is trying to get data though wifi / Wireless CarPlay. (see picture below). As soon as I disconnect wireless CarPlay Waze (and other apps) get data again and start working normally.

I don't see Wifi-Assist in IOS 15 anymore either.

Omar,

thank you for the reply. But unfortunately that is not at all my issue. Wireless CarPlay works by the phone connecting to the car via WiFi to send all the data and video to be displayed on the car radio. For some reason in iOS 15 my phone is trying to use that WiFi connection for data instead of using the cellular network. In iOS 14 the phone was smart enough to say "I am using Wifi to send data to a car stereo, let's use Cellular for actual data". But in iOS 15 the phone is trying to use the radio for all data (but obviously the car does not have any network connectivity, in fact it relies on the phone)..

So basically, the phone is looking to the radio to get all it's data and since the radio is just a receiver, the phone says it is not connected to the internet and so nothing that requires internet will work (things like Siri just say "you must be connected to the internet to use Siri")

Hey there,

I’m having exactly the same issue and it’s driving me mad!

My phone connects to the cars wifi to use CarPlay, but then if I try and use the phone to access the internet it says not connected.

I am using ios15 in a new iPhone 13. At this point in time my new phone isn’t looking so clever.

please update if you get a solution.

Thanks,

emma.

my car has wireless CarPlay, and I can plug to charge, but have no option but to use the wireless option

Hello Jroman7,

It sounds like you are unable to use CarPlay while connected to Wi-Fi. We understand how important this is to you, and we are here to help.

Let's review all of the steps outlined here: If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won’t connect to a Wi-Fi network

Especially pay attention to step 7, and let us know if the issue persists.

If you are still having problems, can you provide a few more details? Are you experiencing any Wi-Fi issues outside of CarPlay? Have you restarted both your iPhone and CarPlay since you first noticed this?

Cheers!

Hi,

Any updates on the level 2 ticket yet? I have the same problem on a 12 running IOS 15.1, it started as soon as IOS 15 installed. In my case the USB cable is a work around but that kind of defeats the purpose. Not sure if this is any kind of a clue to the problem but I was able to make it work temporarily in wireless mode by toggling my personal hotspot off and on again. Doing that seemed to jump start the cellular radio on the phone. Unfortunately it only lasted for a few minutes.

Also, to answer your last question, wifi works fine as does cellular connection. As soon as I disconnect my car from my phone my phone connect to the cellular network and works fine. I can plug in hardwired CarPlay and use it that way, but that is not the point of Wireless CarPlay. Yes, have restarted both plenty of times.

Really? So it just started working out of the blue? Interesting!

I just upgraded to IOS 15.1.1 and lo and behold it started working for me again.

Sneaky these computer programmers, they break something, don't fess up to it and then quietly fix it. I can say stuff like that 'cos I used to do that all the time when I was still a programmer :-)

Or it could be because the install caused the phone to be rebooted...in which case I humbly apologize.

Haha. That thought definitely went though my mind. I know developers do that all the time.

I know I restarted my phone many times trying to get it to work, with no luck. I do think there is either something in the update that fixes it, or just the act of updating corrects a corrupted file in the system and it starts working.

Either way, glad you got it working again!
