You can long-press the keyboard symbol and drag it to the opposite corner. That will move it out of the way and allow you to tap items that may be covered by the keyboard symbol.

As jarurote says in a later post, you need to turn off both "Shortcuts" and "Predictive". Can we move the "Solved" to that post?

Only the original poster can mark a post as "solved". And it can't be removed. If you are concerned that your question is not getting the attention it requires because the thread is marked solved, I'd suggest starting a new thread.

Hi Reinkejohn4, We appreciate you reaching out to us. We understand that you are looking to get rid of the floating keyboard icon which is used to launch the on-screen keyboard.

You can move this feature on the lower-left or lower-right of your screen, but removing this feature is not possible.

You also have the option to disable the dictation feature which will remove the microphone icon to make it smaller. Take care!

Settings > General> Keyboards > Uncheck “Shortcuts”. That is what I had to do to make that EXTREMELY annoying floating box go away. Apple needs to up their game with this stuff. It was causing my iMessages to glitch every time I opened it and I had to drag it to the left side of the screen every time I wanted to hit the send button. Not 100% sure of the other functionality I lost by unchecking Shortcuts but I haven’t honestly noticed so totally worth it to get rid of that thing.

Turning off the option under: settings -> general -> keyboard -> shortcuts does prevent my keyboard icon from appearing when I type into the web address bar (Google search, etc.) but it still appears when I am in text boxes or within website search bars, including as I type this response. So, it only offers partial help. I wish I could make it disappear completely. I use my external keyboard and it really is annoying. I never noticed it until… well, until I noticed it. And now it really bothers me and has been a distraction best and inconvenience at worst.

There are nearly 500 changes in iPadOS 15.

LOTS of things have changed.

NOT everyone is going to like every single change that Apple has made in iPadOS 15.

If you do nit like many of the changes in iPadOS 15, Apple has feedback pages that allow you to voice your opinions/feedback about any about their devices and software.

You can post as much feedback as you like at any time at this Web location.

I rarely use the dictation feature on my iPad and I am not sure what “Shortcuts” are at risk, but I followed the suggestions to disable Shortcuts and the annoying box went away. When using the Signal App, the rectangle was appearing over the input field for message text - thus making it impossible to see if you had a typo before sending. Since the upgrade I was inserting extra lines in order to move the text up…which of course was filling the text messages with needless characters to accommodate the control commands and spaces.

Thanks for offering the solution.

I think my solution moving forward is to wait 90 days or longer before installing “helpful” (ha) Apple IOS updates so the special features like this one can be corrected.

Thanks for answering my question correctly.

If you look above at reply from Kamote0628 - That user gave information which is not true ( "but removing this feature is not possible." ) Too many people don't discern "I don't know", and "truth" very well. I have more respect for one who claims they don't know versus giving false information.

Kamote is labelled "Community Specialist". Misinformation given by someone representing Apple in response to a "consumers question" doesn't look good on reputation of company said person represents. I have spent thousands of dollars on Apple products over the years due to high quality of their products.

Quality of products can only be as high as quality of customer service.

Thanks again for your correct/accurate response which solved my problem!

You say "but removing this feature is not possible." in response to my question.

You gave information which is not correct. That doesn't look good coming from a user labeled as "community specialist" next to Apple logo. I have spent thousands of dollars on Apple products over the years and their products can only be as good as their customer service.

You go on to give information which doesn't pertain to my question.

The time I spent reading your reply is time I will never get back.

Next time, just don't respond if you're not aware

This idea does NOT work for iOS 15.2.1 on an iPad Pro.

The wretched Floating Keyboard Icon remains no matter what the status of the Settings > General> Keyboards > “Shortcuts”

I have submitted feedback on the official Apple webpage listed elsewhere in this thread.

It's not likely to be fixed, because this complaint rides upon underlying cultural problems with Apple:

1) They do not test new features properly with real users and real iPads

2) They force new features on the weary uninterested public, without providing individual options to turn them off.

Mark Passio at WOEIH was stating that at one point Apple had a 24/7 telephone hotline that you could ring up, a real person would answer and stay with you until your tech problem was fixed. At £1000 for each iPhone or iPad, and $3T current assest in 2022, you'd think Apple could easily still afford that service level?
