Redaction in Preview not working again...

Big Sur 11.6

Preview 11.0

Redaction is messed up again. In addition to redacted areas, other areas of the document are redacted at random. Having to go back to drawing a black square over redacted content then saving and exporting.

Boot into Safe Mode according to Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

I guess what's frustrating to me is that I feel like we have been using the Preview redact feature correctly, but nobody, including anyone from Apple has piped up to explain how the feature is DESIGNED to work, reconciled with how it is actually working in current versions of Preview.

The "help" description above SAYS text, but the cursor changes to a crosshairs, not an I-beam for text, and again, our experience thus far is that when it works, it redacts anything you rubber band around, text and all.

Yes, but a PDF can consist of both text and images, or all text, or all image. Opening a PDF document is still opening a PDF document despite what its contents are. So since we don't use text in any of our PDF's, we probably never see the I-Beam as all of our PDF's contain image data.

But that's semantics that maybe should be more clearly spelled out in the help documents....AND it doesn't really matter because it still doesn't work right in the end....with images...in a PDF.

And what do you base that on? We have been using it for some time now to redact image content.

My complaint is that it is on again, off again working. If Apple did not intend for redaction on images to work, it shouldn't allow non-text to be selected. Period. No text, no I-beam. Anything more and it is misleading. And it has been working.

That's why I'm not buying that "images ever worked or was supposed to work". I have hundreds of image scanned PDF documents that we created and redacted that says otherwise.

If Apple just throws half-baked things into release software, then that's a real problem as far as I'm concerned. If you support that position, then you must not have to deal with a day-to-day business operation that relies on software working correctly.

I suspect that it is in fact supported, I think the evidence supports that it is supposed to, we just can't get any official word on that. Only your opinion and mine at this point, and Apple's not listening.
