iOS 15 Memories feature is a huge downgrade. With iOS15 - Can no longer pick parts of clips, change lengths of clips, change volume on clips. A huge, catastrophic downgrade in features.

Memories was one of my favorite features of the iPhone.

I could very put a bunch of clips and photos into an album and create a memory.

Apple did a decent job at picking out good photos and clips and then I just had to edit / tweak.

For example,

in Birthday party clips could select just a part of "happy birthday" song,

You could get only the part of the clip of blowing out candles...

iOS 15 is a huge downgrade to Memories. While I like I can add music, there was a stripdown of some major features.

Missing features:

-Can't auto-create a memory out of an album. You have to manually select photos and video clips. The AI is missing that used to get a 90% great video.

-Can't change clip duration (only select a portion of it)

-Can't change the volume on a clip (e.g. you want the "Happy Birthday" singing playing while the music softens

-Can't add clips/photos to album and have them appear as options while you tweak the memory. For example, if someone sends me a photo to include in the memory video.

Apples Grand plan has now become clear.... iMovie 3.0 now replaces what used to be Apple memories. https://www.thestreet.com/personal-finance/apple-imovie-update-magic-movie-storyboards

If you download or update your iMovie app you'll see a new feature called "Magic Movie'

I had a play with it yesterday and it pretty good, essentially a replacement for what "Photo memories" used to do.

Shame Apple decided to leave its users in the lurch for 6months, launching iOS 15 yet it has taken them till now to realease this alternative.

I encourage everyone who is as dissatisfied with Apples removal of the great photo memories functionality from ios14 on ios15 to file a complaint directly to Apple -> Photos feedback: https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos/

in the hope that they actually aknowledge the general dissatisfaction with this move - and follow-up to make the great number of dissatisfied customers happy once again!

I agree, ios 15 memories is a downgrade for exactly the reasons you state.

The "Happy Birthday" example was exactly the use I enjoyed two weeks ago before the update. Being able to select which part of the clip that was included was essential.

Also I don't like how it now picks music that can't be exported. I'm finding it much more difficult now to choose the right music because it seems to float above the app, rather than being linked with the play/pause button. This seems to be more of an issue with memories you create from an Album and seems to be better on apple-suggested memories.

In fairness, there are two good improvements:

1) In ios 14, I found it impossible to reorder videos and photos in Memories. But now in ios 15 it's easy to change the time/date on photos/videos so that memories puts them in the correct order.

2) I like how you can export at different perspective ratios and the new 'square' output setting.

Yes, with you 100%.

The new Memories feature is not well executed, and was an unnecessary update that removes features rather than adds them.

I preferred to see Memories in an album view: why can’t I have the option of this now?

Why can’t I delete a memory from inside the memory, and instead have to exit it and do it from the For You page?

And strangest of all my phone is now pumping out multiple memories per day, far more than I can follow, edit, or view. Many of them repeats or quite pointless, including just some random days that I have no need for my phone to create a memory from.

Overall it’s a very unappealing change that should be reversed, or at the very least offer a little more flexibility. After all these are MY memories!

Yes! All of this! I just discovered the inferiority of the new iOS 15 memories feature as compared to iOS 14. So upset. I used to use the autogenerated memories it would compile for events and locations as the basis of the video I’d post on social media. I loved how I could lengthen video clips or change the time index because sometimes the Photos app would bring in the wrong part of the video. I’m soooooo sad that they striped this down. Now I have to start creating from scratch again. 😢

Yes. It's also really annoying that you can't remove the song, or choose your own. I personally dislike all of the song options. But then I dislike the entire functionality of the new Memories feature. It's such a huge change as to be a completely different feature and should have been named as such – while preserving the former Memories functionality.

I tried out iMovie tonight. Not as simple as Memories as you cannot select a particular day (I liked the auto generation function as a starting point). Also it doesn’t seem to support verticals photos/videos. My videos were sent to a horizontal format with the bars on either side, and my pictures were just cut off with heads missing now. Found some blogs describing work around a bit cannot find the functionality in my version to actually make it work. Why can’t we just have the old Memories back?

I’m having big issues with the memories feature in iOS 15 also. New memories appear and then disappear and when I press on the “for you” page the photos app just crashes and closes. Then I am unable to reopen the photos app.

I agree about the downgrade. What was the greatest hidden feature on our iPad and phones is now so disappointing. I agree that the subject selection makes no sense, the inability to select a length is a big downgrade. I’m not even sure I like the musical connection to Apple Music. I liked the generic different soundtrack options. I’m not upgrading my iPhone because I want to hang to the function. PLEASE fix this in a future upgrade.
