How do I keep files solely on the iCloud without having it automatically download to my Mac laptop?

How do I keep files solely on the iCloud server without having it automatically download to my Mac laptop? I want to be able to use my iCloud as an internet cloud storage, and not have it waste storage space on my laptop of files not needed for my personal laptop. Whenever I upload files to my iCloud from my phone or iPad it automatically downloads to the iCloud Drive on my laptop taking up storage.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.6

Jeffrey,

Thank you for those details.

Let's go to System Preferences > Apple ID > iCloud > Select options beside iCloud Drive > Uncheck Desktop and Documents Folder.

Once that is complete, you can still access files by going to Finder > iCloud Drive. You will be able to drag and drop files and it will only be stored in iCloud and not duplicated on your computer

Hopefully this helps.

Take Care!

That's actually expected. iCloud is primarily a synchronization service, not an offline file store. You could right-click on files in iCloud Drive and select remove download.

If you have a feature suggestion, like your folder for offline storage, visit apple.com/feedback.

You may actually find it more beneficial to use iCloud desktop and documents too. It sounds like you're duplicating files rather than simply keeping the file in your iCloud Drive folder (which would leave it on device and place it in the cloud).

Hello Jefferys444,

It sounds like you have a few questions about storing your files in iCloud Drive. We understand how important this is to you and we are here to help.

This article may be able to provide some guidance on file storage: Use iCloud Drive to store documents on your Mac, iPhone, and iPad

If you have devices with iCloud Drive turned off, documents and data on those devices aren’t kept up to date with documents and data on your devices with iCloud Drive turned on.

Hopefully this helps.

Cheers!

I have my iCloud Drive turned on for my laptop as well as for my iPhone and my iPad. When I upload files from my laptop to the iCloud Drive folder, it makes a duplicate of the file already stored on my computer's hard drive which takes up unnecessary memory space. Even if I try to upload a file to my iCloud Drive from iCloud.com it automatically downloads that file to my laptop's iCloud Drive folder and again takes up space on my laptop's memory. However on my iPad and iPhone, I can see that those files are present in the drive, but they show that the cloud symbol in that they would need to be downloaded in order to access.

What I want to be able to do: have an iCloud folder available to drag and drop but not have it duplicate storage on my laptop that is just in a different location so that I can use it as a backup, and use iCloud Drive as a cloud storage that can be accessed through iCloud.com but not have whatever file I add to it automatically download to my laptop as well. For example, I have a 90gb folder that I uploaded to iCloud.com from work, and when I went to use my personal laptop it automatically began to download the 90gb folder which is not what I want whatsoever.
