Using printer settings for a clients Printer

I want to design a poster for printing on a clients plotter, but I do not have physical or network access to the the equipment to install it in the normal fashion. Is there a way to install a "phantom" plotter so I can choose use its paper size options and other settings? I want to create the poster and then send it to the client for printing. I am using MS Word on Big Sur 11.6 on a MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports).

What worked for me in preparing a 20" x 30" poster for printing was the following:

1 - under File ➙ Page Setup in the app I used to create the posted I selected "Manage Custom Sizes…" in the Paper Size menu.

2 - made that size 20x30.

3 - I proceeded to create the poster.

4 - when the poster was completed I did a Print to PDF and saved it as a PDF file.

5 - I sent the pdf file to the printers that was to print the poster.

You may not be able to access the client's printer remotely but can send them the file to print.

Hello Paulie88,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. Based on your post, you'd like to know if you can install a 'phantom' plotter on your Mac to use Microsoft Word to create a file and share it to be printed.

There isn't a way to install a 'phantom' plotter or printer on the Mac. We'd suggest partnering with Microsoft for your options when creating this file/document: Microsoft Support They'll know if there is a recommendable size for printing with your goal in mind.

Wishing you well, take care.

Thank you for replying. I did try to use "Manage Custom Sizes" but I had a tough time designing as far as getting the dimensions correct. When I sent the Word file it got messed up on the other end when they opened the file and chose the plotter. I did not think of printing to a PDF file. I think that is a good solution!
