Using late 2009 21.5 IMAC as an external monitor for new MacBook Pro

Hi,

My old IMAC is slowing down now and I’m planning to buy a new MacBook Pro with M chip to replace it. Just wondering if I can use the old IMAC as an external monitor for the new MacBook rather than recycle it? And if so how would I connect the two?

thanks

iMac, OS X 10.11

Sorry that will not work, because neither of those Mac’s support Target Display Mode.

You can use an aftermarket external display with most Mac’s including your MacBook Pro.

As for slowing down? That is common for the older iMac, but not so common for a new MacBook Pro unless you have installed some third party AV or other needless junk-ware.

To find out, get and run EtreCheck Pro on your MacBook Pro.

see > https://etrecheck.com/

Then post back here or in the MacBook Pro section with your Report.
