Ipad magic keyboard auto backlight issue

My iPad Pro magic keyboard backlight gets brighter as soon as I turn on a light and dims again when I’m in a dark area. It never turns off, what it should do in my opinion if you get to a well lit room.

Is it correct that the backlight basically works in reverse and basically mimics the screen brightness?

Thanks in advance!

Hello kc50karim,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand your concern with your iPad Magic Keyboard backlight, and we'd be happy to clear things up.

In dark surroundings, the backlight increases in intensity, and when it is bright, the backlight should decrease.

When did you first notice this issue? Did anything change around the time this started, like updating your iPad?

Does it work as expected when adjusting the brightness manually?

Set up and use Magic Keyboard for iPad

The Magic Keyboard does not have its own ambient light sensor and it uses the one on your iPad. So if the backlight's brightness does not change automatically, there’s likely something covering the light sensor on your iPad.

Please check if anything covering the ambient light sensor on your iPad. It should be behind the glass near the camera.

We hope this information is useful. Kind regards.

Hello kc50karim,

Thanks for getting back to us with those additional details, and this helpful video. It looks like your Magic Keyboard for your iPad backlight is not working as expected, so let's continue working on this together.

Let's test if adjusting the brightness of the keys manually works differently by following these steps:

"Like an iPad, the brightness of the Magic Keyboard automatically adjusts based on the light conditions around you. If you want to manually adjust the brightness of the keys on your Magic Keyboard, go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Hardware Keyboard."

Do you have Dark Mode, Night Shift, or True Tone turned on your iPad's settings?

iPadOS 15.0.2 was recently released, so if you haven't already, please back up your iPad, and update:

If your iPad is up-to-date on software, let's try to restart it by following these steps:

Restart your iPad

If the behavior persists or you run into any trouble, please reach out again.

  Best Regards.

Hi there, I also have been experiencing this exact issue on my 2020 12.9" Ipad Pro, running IpadOS 15.1, with magic keyboard. This has bee happening since I bought the magic keyboard about a year ago.

I figured this was the backwards way that it was supposed to work but it never made sense to me. I would think that a darker situation would increase the backlight a bit and a lighter situation would dim/turn off the backlight to conserve battery. Curious to hear a resolution to this issue as I've contacted Apple Support before and was told to keep an eye out for future software updates.
