I bought an iphone 13 from Spectrum. They sent me a sim card with it and said it was a 5G sim and needed to be used with the phone. I was already with Spectrum, had an iphone 6, I just took the sim from that phone and put it into the 13. It works. Do I really need to use the "5G sim" they supplied?

Unless the SIM card they provided you for your iPhone 6 was enabled for 5G service, you will not have to use the new SIM (and you can keep it as a spare.) Otherwise, it may work, but you will not be able to access 5G service without using the new card.
SIM cards specifically for 5G include new authentication methods and security features when using a 5G connection. So if you have a 5G network available and want your cellular voice and data connection to use the new security protocols and features that are part of the 5G specifications, then you do need a new SIM.
There is no such thing as a 5G SIM card.
I am using the same sim I have had for years with T-mobile.
I have 5G access without issues.
If your carrier says you need to use the new SIM card, you best use it I guess.
