Activation Help

I was give an iPad by my son who has since passed away. He never removed the device from his account. How can I unlock the iPad since the message I get is “Activation lock prevents anyone who is not the owner from using this iPad”? It keeps asking for the Apple ID and password that were used during setup which I don’t have access to.
