What does updating library mean on photos?

im trying to open a hard drive with lots of photos on it but when I click on it it pulls up a screen that says updating library. No issues with the progress bar it’s loading slowly but what does it mean when it does this? Is it downloading the photos to my Mac? I just want to access and see the photos not download them

Photos Issues in Hgh Sierra I have just upgraded fro Yosemite to High Sierra at the request of some work related remote requirement. I now find that I cannot open Photos. It states that it is updating library. I do not use the Apple icloud, so all the the pictures are on my mac drive. I do have over 20,000 pictures. It been running for over 4 hours and it is still showing the download at 0%. Can anyone please offer any advice or help. Many thanks.

Sonoma 14.1 problem with photo library I downloaded Sonoma 14.1 to my 2022 Macbook Air 2 days ago and I can't access my 2 photo libraries from my desktop. I get an error message that photos is locked and the little cloud sign has a strike through it. I can still access photos normally in the cloud. How do I fix this issue or do I need to download all the photos from the cloud back onto my desktop and if so how do I select them all to download in one go?

It probably means the library was created with an earlier version of photos, and it is being updated for compatibility with your current version on your new mac.
