iCloud and Photos app

I am trying to determine how to manage all our photos and I can't find this answer anywhere. If I turn on my iCloud photos on my iPhone and the Photos app on our Mac. If I understand correctly, I take a pic on my iPhone, it's uploaded to iCloud and then downloaded to my Mac. Where would I find that photo in the Photos app on the Mac? For instance, I take 5 random, unrelated photos on my phone. How are those photos categorized/what album do they go in when they make it to the Photos app or do they even go to the Photos app?

Just into your photos library in date order. Not into any specific album.

Thank you. But is there a specific album it goes to where I won't have to search 5000 pictures to find them? I am a pc guy. I have an iPhone, my wife has the iMac but I'm clueless on this stuff. I search this question 100 different ways and couldn't find an answer.
